Q: Who are the inspectors?  What about bio-security?  What measures do the inspectors take to prevent the transmission of disease?

A: The inspectors are highly trained poultry specialists; they will enter your farm premises cautiously and professionally, using poultry-industry standard bio-security protocols: vehicle tires are always washed with “Synergize” disinfectant and fresh plastic booties are worn — further, ARU will work with you to inspect your farm when you are out of birds.  If ARU inspects your farm while you are in production, inspectors never go inside of poultry buildings with an active flock inside.  


Q: What will they be looking for? Can you tell me more about where will they need to go on the farm?

A: The inspectors will be taking pictures and documenting the characteristics of your farm premises and buildings.  The inspectors will carefully review each poultry house interior, each control room, and each generator room.  ARU’s goal is to work with poultry farm owners and insurance companies to reduce the risk of loss to poultry houses. The most common losses to poultry houses are fire, lightning, wind, and collapse. The inspectors will take assessments of the strength of the structural elements of the buildings and use special tools to measure the effectiveness and safety of the poultry houses’ electrical systems.  


Q: Do I have to walk around with the inspector the whole time he is there?  Do I even need to be there when the inspector comes?

A: You do not have to babysit the inspector. It will take an average of 40-50 minutes per poultry house to perform the inspection; it is not expected that the farm owner will remain present for this entire period. Many farm owners only participate at the very beginning or the at very end, to answer questions pertaining to the poultry houses’ year of construction, original builder, and any recent upgrades. If you prefer, you do not even have to be on premises during the inspection. However, many farm owners are curious and enjoy being present for at least part of the inspection.  This is entirely up to you.
